Gate 5 - The Water Gate

WATER GATE: The word of God
(Nehemiah 3:26) The temple servants living on the hill of Ophel made repairs up to a point opposite the Water Gate towards the east and the projecting tower. (NIV)

The Water Gate was so named because it had the city’s main source of water - the Gihon Spring. It was also a large area that was used for the reading of the law (Nehemiah 8:1,3,16)

What is the significance of this gate?
The Water Gate symbolizes the Word of God. Christ is the Word and we need to learn from Him. The Word of God is very important for our Christian life, as the Word of God judges our thoughts and attitude of heart. It is the source by which the Spirit speaks to us. This is similar to how the water from this gate leads to the water flowing at the Fountain Gate. Christ has given us Himself, the living Word of God, to succeed in our Christian walk.

John 4:13-14 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life. (NIV)

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitude of hearts. (NIV)

Matthew 22:34-40 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”(NIV)

Revelation 22:1-5 Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. 3 No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. 4 They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5 There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever. (NIV)

This door leads to the 'Pump Room' where the main water source for the house was drawn from an Artesian well that is sunk into the watercourse of the 'greensand ridge', that the house sits upon.
