Gate 9 - The Old Gate
OLD GATE (also called Jeshanah Gate): The chief cornerstone
(Nehemiah 3:6) The Jeshanah Gate was repaired by Joiada son of Paseah and Meshullam son of Besodeiah. They laid its beams and put its doors and bolts and bars in place. (NIV)

The third gate mentioned is the old gate, which is thought to have been at a corner of the walls. It is believed to have been the old entrance into the city.

Because the gate is thought to have been at a corner of the walls, we are reminded of Jesus as the cornerstone. Not only is he the solid foundation of our faith, but is a stumbling block to some.

Psalm 118:22-23
The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; 23 the LORD has done this, and it is marvellous in our eyes. (NIV)
Isaiah 8:14 He will be a sanctuary; but for both houses of Israel he will be a stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall.
And for the people of Jerusalem he will be a trap and a snare. (NIV)
1 Peter 2: 6-8 For in Scripture it says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.” 7 Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, “The stone the builders rejected has become the Cornerstone,” 8 and, “A stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall.” They stumble because they disobey the message— which is also what they were destined for. (NIV)
